The Ideal Hospitality Leader

Hospitality & Tourism management is the service sector industry relating to greeting the guest in order to offer the great experience. Of course, since it is a job that deals with people, it is most necessary to have leadership skills associated with the People Savvy. For instance, they are expressive service, intercommunication skills, and also could be networking. In addition, make sure that we can develop a employees' professionalism through good coaching & training so that they can be ready to treat guests anywhere, anytime. While all of these leadership skills are important to being a leader in Hospitality & Tourism management, I think Business Savvy is the more important part for me because my dream is to be a general manager. Because after I become general manager, I should be fluent in STRATEGIC DECISION MAKING and familiar with various NUMBERING.

Career Goals

I am spending all my values, passions, and talents for being a Hotelier. More specifically, I want to be a general manager at the hotel in the United States or any other place famous for tourism. Also, I think my natural ability to always treat people kindly and brightly is the best talent to be a hotelier. Moreover, the reason why I want to be a general manager in the hotel is that I want to run luxury hotel in the future, and also develop hotel industry in my home country, South Korea after developing my influence.

5 years after graduating, before I get a job at a hotel in the United States, I have to build my operation skills in other countries as much as being allowed to work in the United States (Most hotels in the U.S. they offer working visa who are only deserved to receive). Therefore, I think that I will reinforce and train my skills at hotels in China, Japan, or other East Asia countries.

Before finding a job at a hotel in Asia, I will try to get a job in the United States also for the OPT period given to the international students. OPT would be provided only for one year, so during this term I will maintain the opportunities to get a job in U.S. as much as I can do.

Other Goals

1. I will study English so that I can speak English as well as the native speaker.

2. I will graduate from SDSU with a GAP of 3.5 or higher

3. I will be an important and precious person to my family and friend. I think this is the most important thing in life.

SECTION TWO: REFLECTIONS

Simulations

For the first simulation, the strength was the Business Savvy because I did contribute to undertake the Numberwise. Unlikely, I could not express the People Savvy part at that time. Thus, my goal was to be prepared to improve communication skills ahead of the second simulation. Unfortunately, I could not achieve the goal in that second simulation for several reasons. First, I could not have the right time to take a chance to express my own ideas. Second, the atmosphere and the time limit have made us less concerned about the Business parts, because we didn't have enough time just to plan the event.

My Perception and the Perceptions of Others

In the first simulation, the 'Industry Observer' said that I showed strong performance in the simulation towards Business Savvy because I was the only one in the team who kept asking questions about budgeting. Unfortunately, I have not shown a stronger stance towards Business Savvy in the second simulation, because, at that time I couldn't ask Numberwise relevant questions by the timing. On the contrary, the industry observer in the second simulation talked me that I had a strength of professionalism and time management.

I think I learned the most about the importance of networks through the Mentor Network because mentor helped me get the chance to be an LMSA board member.

There are two disappointing parts about me throughout this semester. One is that I have not found internship yet, and the other is that I have not learned as many English vocabularies as I had intended. For this reason, I have a plan to learn more than thousand of English vocabularies in summer vacation.

DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY

Title:

Take a role of International Student Liaison in LMSA

Background:

Background:

The position of International Student Liasion in LMSA is necessarily required to both LMSA and me. For LMSA, they might need the person who acts as the International Student Liasion in order to gather more international students into their activities. A few weeks ago, I was astonished that there were only two international students including myself had attended the Payne Awards event, which shows the current situation of the LMSA that they were not being aggressive with inducing the international students before. Therefore, they needed to open the new position relating to the international students. Otherwise, they will never be able to assemble international students unless they make changes. For me, there are several reasons to want to be an LMSA board member. Firstly, I would like to have the experience of growing a leadership by becoming a board member. Secondly, I would like to enhance the intercommunicating skills through communicating with other board members and the general members. Thirdly, I want to be a role model like Takamasa to the other international students who are hesitated to be involved with the student association. Finally, it will be the great chance to put more detailed on my resume!

Description:

The first phase of my duty as the International student liaison is to research and be aware of the exact current situation of the flow of the participation rate among the international students. In this phase, I also need to receive the list of international students in order to know the demographics of them. In the second phase, I will set up the plan and strategies in detailed right after I collect the list of the international students and this phase would be the toughest phase due to the insufficient information and network with the international students. When I was a freshman and took HTM 201, I was surprised by the number of international students in the class. Obviously, the number of international students were almost half of the students in the class. Recently, I knew that most international students they only take 1 year for HTM class through exchange students program. Although they unavoidably need to left SDSU after 1 year by end of the program, we need to induce them to join in the LMSA events. Therefore, I will set up the plan and strategies based on this circumstance. In the next phase, after setting up the plan and strategies, I will execute the plan and strategies that I set up for gathering the international students. Furthermore, I will set the goal; for instance, I will gather more than 30% of the international students as much as possible for the first event.

In the fourth phase, right after the first event, I will evaluate my self how I have done this with comparing to the goal and pros and cons. I'll have to make up for my mistakes so I'll evaluate harder and come up with measures.

Success Indicators:

A success indicator for being an International Student liaison would be justified by the increase in the percentage of the participation of the international students at the LMSA events. From my point of view, improving the network and the intercommunication skills, which are the personal goal of being LMSA board, will be evaluated by how many people that I succeed to have a relationship and the changing in fluency of speaking English.
